How to make delicious Hot Ginger Coffee

Would you like to add a little spunk and pizazz to your coffee? Particularly in the winter months, it can be nice to change it up and have something extra in your daily cup o’ Joe. If you feel up for it and are in need of something different try this delicious hot ginger coffee.

Why Ginger?

Ginger was traded in Europe from the East around the time of the Middle Ages. I think it’s well known that ginger supposedly helps with nausea and digestion. I’ve gotta say though, for one who has been through the first trimester multiple times it’s now just another thing that makes me feel more nauseous during that time. Oh well. It tastes great other times though!

Ginger has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. For this drink though, it’s just for flavor and embracing the season. When I think of winter I think of wanting to be warm, and ginger is one of those roots that’s both full of spice and flavor. I love experimenting with different coffees and, in my opinion, this one is best enjoyed as a latte.

If you have a French press and you only thought it was for coffee, surprise! You can make a press of loose leaf tea too or steep different roots and herbs. So, back to the ginger. For this coffee I chopped up about a 1/3 of a large ginger root in medium-sized cubes. Fingers included in the photo for size reference.

ok, how do I make a hot ginger coffee?

First, you’ll want to prepare just like you’re making a normal French press. You can find a tutorial for the perfect French press here.

Then, slice the ginger and add it to the dry grounds in the press.

Next, add the boiling water. Let steep for 4-6 min or however long you prefer. Press down the plunger, pour, and enjoy!

Like I said before, in my opinion this hot ginger coffee is best enjoyed as a latte. Perhaps with a little maple syrup with a bit of cinnamon and nutmeg on top for beauty and a little something extra.
